Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Your Questions, Answered

We know cannabis topics can be complex, especially with evolving local and state rules. Below are the questions we hear most often about the San Jose Cannabis Council (SJCC), our work, and how we support the community. If your question isn't here, feel free to reach out.

General Questions

What is the San Jose Cannabis Council?

SJCC is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2021. We focus on education, advocacy, equity support, and community programs related to cannabis in San Jose. We are not a government agency, licensed business, or dispensary—we exist to provide free, accurate resources and amplify community voices in a regulated cannabis environment.

Is SJCC affiliated with the City of San Jose or the state?

No, we are an independent non-profit. However, we collaborate closely with the City's Division of Cannabis Regulation (San Jose Police Department) and reference official resources from the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) and Department of Public Health (CDPH). Our work complements—but does not duplicate—official programs like the City's Cannabis Equity Program.

What does SJCC actually do?

We deliver:

  • Free education on responsible use, local laws, and health impacts
  • Support for equity applicants (mentorship, workshops)
  • Harm reduction and youth prevention resources
  • Advocacy for fair policies
  • Neighborhood events, meetups, and community outreach
How are you funded?

Primarily through individual donations, membership dues, event sponsorships, and occasional small grants. We do not receive direct funding from cannabis businesses or government for core operations (to maintain independence). All financials are detailed in our annual reports.

Program & Services Questions

Do you offer cannabis products, medical recommendations, or business licenses?

No. We do not sell, dispense, recommend, or license cannabis. We provide education and resources only. For medical advice, consult a licensed healthcare provider. For business licensing, visit the official City of San Jose or DCC websites.

How can I get help with the City's Cannabis Equity Program?

We offer free supplemental workshops, mentorship, and navigation support for equity applicants (especially those from the 2024 academy graduates and lottery-selected cohort). We do not handle applications—that's managed by the City. Check the official San Jose Cannabis Program page for current status and requirements.

Do you have programs for youth or parents?

Yes—our Youth Prevention Program provides age-appropriate resources for parents, educators, and teens on preventing underage access and misuse. Materials align with Santa Clara County and state guidelines emphasizing education over scare tactics.

Are your events and resources free?

Most are free or low-cost (e.g., suggested donations for larger events). We aim to remove financial barriers to participation.
Advocacy & Policy Questions

What positions does SJCC take on cannabis policy?

We advocate for:

  • Expanded equity pathways and sustained funding (e.g., supporting local use of GO-Biz grants)
  • Strong youth protection and responsible marketing rules
  • Balanced regulations that support legal markets while addressing community concerns (odor, security, etc.)
  • Evidence-based harm reduction and public health approaches

We do not endorse specific businesses or push for unregulated expansion.

How can I get involved in advocacy?

Join our monthly action alerts, attend roundtables, sign petitions, or contact your City Council member using our templates. See the Advocacy section for toolkits and current campaigns.
